Car accessories for cycles goes far beyond simple cycle racks. Some cars now have an extendable bar behind the rear number plate and rear lights which extend with it. Up to three bikes can be harnessed to the bar for easy travel, but when not in use is conveniently stowed back in place. Alternatively, roof bars (carrying bikes up right on the roof of your car) have the advantage of allowing access to the rear hatch, not obstructing the view, and does not have to be removed when not in use.
Heavy bikes are cumbersome to board, but lighter bikes are easy to manage. The cycles are secure but do add up to five feet (1.7 meters) to the height of your vehicle (watch out for low bridges), but have proven to be secure, and add very little drag or wind resistance . Drivers are advised to reduce their maximum speeds to around sixty miles per hour, which is still adequate for motorway driving.
